Andrea Hidalgo

About

I'm a feminist, sculptress, drawer, reader, writer, welder, singer, lover, fighter, dancer, teacher, bisexual, biracial, femme, prankster, jokester, superstitious, slightly psychic, stoic, sardonic Lady.

I dropped out of high school in my sophomore year because it was a "waste of time" then went on to graduate early with a President's Honor Roll certificate which my mother has kept alongside all of my baby teeth.  I went on to a CC and dropped out in my sophomore year to work odd jobs.  After a few years of jobs that weren't odd enough, I quit to learn how to play guitar and to sing.   I went to a university for two years to finish my undergraduate degree in Art.  I moved into an art graduate studio and spent two years comparing, contrasting and debating the idea of doing things simply because they are funny versus placing a piece of paper under a rock named Heidegger and calling it Kant.

In 2014, I moved to L.A. and took up playing the guitar to sing songs limited to subjects of love and heartache and performed only for current lovers, past lovers, and the current or past lovers of my lovers.  I enjoy developing theories on how learning to garden is quite similar to developing feminist ideologies and meeting and engaging with people who live alternatives to the average everyday cis/white/heteropatriarchy to inform the development of my own alternatives.

My work examines representations and alternatives of love, lust, sex, pleasure, sexuality, gender and power. Questioning the ethos and pathos involved in performing identities and activities considered taboo, I'm in a constant exploration of the agency that can be created through practicing what I am not supposed to be.

In the amorous realm, the most painful wounds are inflicted more often by what one sees than by what one knows.

-Barthes, A Lover’s Discourse

I spend most of my free time combining my severe coffee addiction with writing short comical dialogues, researching and sharing current feminist articles, planning absurd happenings for my friends, learning how to use a whip, trying to make people laugh and practicing empathy and love.  I'm in love with love, heartache and being in love and I'm in love with many people.
